The honest material truth (smell, shedding, mould) of wicker storage basket

Water hyacinth baskets can have a mild plant scent and release occasional loose fibres; persistent mustiness or crumbling deserves attention. For anyone weighing up a wicker storage basket, the honest material truth (smell, shedding, mould) starts with placement: choose a dry, ventilated room, then keep the weave clean and the contents dry.

Do Water Hyacinth Baskets Smell? What’s Normal and How to Air Them

A light, grassy or earthy scent can occur in a new water hyacinth basket because it contains dried plant material. Airing may reduce it, but there is no reliable timetable for every basket. A strong, persistent musty smell, especially alongside dampness or visible growth, calls for closer inspection.

Packaging can make a plant scent more noticeable. Smell alone cannot confirm mould. Check the base, corners and lining before filling it.

Follow this simple airing routine:

  • Unpack fully: remove packaging and leave the basket empty.
  • Choose dry airflow: place it in a ventilated indoor room, away from steamy bathrooms.
  • Avoid forced drying: keep it off radiators and away from hairdryers.
  • Check daily: assess whether the scent is fading before storing textiles.

Use the first few days as a checking period, rather than a guaranteed deadline.

In our manufacturer, only mature plants are cut close to the root, and the leaves and roots are removed. The stems are thoroughly washed to clear away river mud and debris. The traditional and most common method is spreading the stems out in flat, sunny yards. Workers carefully rotate or turn the stems every few hours (typically every 2 to 4 hours per day) until they dry evenly without molding, rotting, or developing green patches. Sun drying usually takes a few days to about four days depending on the weather before being gathered into weaving process. Thus, you will feel the natural smell of dried water hyacinth and our production process will take longer than other manufacturers.

At Tonking Eco Houseware, careful preparation begins with mature water hyacinth plants. Our manufacturing team cuts them near the base, removes the leaves and roots, then thoroughly washes the stems to remove river mud and debris.

The clean stems are spread across open, sunny drying yards and turned regularly—typically every two to four hours during the day—to encourage even drying and help prevent mould, decay and green patches. Depending on the weather, this stage can take several days, often around four, before the stems are ready for weaving. We allow time for this preparation rather than rushing the material into production. The gentle, earthy scent you may notice comes from the dried water hyacinth itself.

Contact Tonking support if the smell remains strong, worsens or seems chemical. Photograph any suspicious marks and report dampness on arrival. Avoid masking odours with perfume or essential oils.

Do They Shed? Fibre Dust, Linings and What to Expect

An occasional loose fibre or small amount of plant dust can occur with woven natural materials, particularly after unpacking and handling. Repeated piles of debris, breaking strands or an unravelling weave deserve a quality check. A fabric lining creates a barrier between contents and weave, but cannot prevent the basket itself from deteriorating.

Start with a soft, dry cloth and gently lift away loose surface debris. Avoid pulling protruding strands, which could disturb the weave. Check whether debris decreases after this initial clean. If it continues collecting, ask support to assess the basket rather than accepting it as inevitable.

Tonking’s baskets combine handcrafted water hyacinth, an iron frame and a linen cover/lining, as described in our product range. Before exporting from manufacturer, we have inspected the product carefully to make sure the best quality, little fibre dust of the product delivered to your hom. Use the lined interior for dry textiles. An unlined basket leaves the weave easier to inspect directly. With either design, check beneath the contents regularly and follow the liner’s care label before attempting washing.

Mould and Damp: Where Water Hyacinth Is (and Isn’t) Safe in a British Home

Damp affected 5% of dwellings in England—around 1.4 million—in 2024, according to the English Housing Survey. This is an England figure, not a UK-wide estimate. Water hyacinth baskets belong in dry, ventilated spaces; avoid persistent condensation, wet contents and damp surfaces. A lining does not make the basket waterproof.

Autumn and winter condensation makes placement especially relevant in British homes. Choose an open shelf in a dry sitting room or bedroom. Leave space around the basket instead of wedging it against a cold external wall. Avoid splash zones, damp cellars and enclosed cupboards that smell musty.

  • Store only dry items: keep wet towels, muddy footwear and damp washing elsewhere.
  • Clean conservatively: use a dry cloth; never soak or hose the basket.
  • Manage moisture: use existing extractor fans and keep ventilation openings clear.
  • Inspect underneath: check the base and lining regularly for moisture or changes.

Here in Tonking manufacturer, we look for a golden-brown colour and a target moisture content of approximately 8–19%. Alongside traditional sun drying, we use drying equipment to help bring moisture levels into a more consistent range before export. This additional step supports preparation for delivery to European homes, where keeping the finished baskets dry and well ventilated remains essential.

If you spot suspected mould, stop using the basket and contact support before attempting treatment. Do not assume a surface wipe has resolved growth within the weave.
